Copper Theft
Lead thefts down

Improved security and a fall in metal prices have seen lead theft from Notts churches falling.

So far this year, there have been 20 thefts from churches in the county. Since the summer of 2007, there have been around 180 lead thefts from the 95 CofE churches in the county.

The last two years has seen the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group (EIG), which insures over 95% of all Notts CofE churches, issue clients with SmartWater kits. SmartWater is a harmless water-based solution which is chemically unique. Property marked with the solution can be irrefutably traced back to the owner, and criminals coming into contact with the wet solution can be linked with crime scenes.

Chris Pitt, of EIG, said: “The Southwell and Nottingham Diocese was one of the worst hit in 2008. We paid 109 claims costing £400,000. This compares with only seven claims at £12,000 in 2005. Claims are lower this year so far but it’s still important churches are on guard.”

Jonathan Pickett, of the Diocese of Nottingham and Southwell, said: “SmartWater is a deterrent. The parishes have put up posters advertising it. Good lighting in the grounds and CCTV are also important.”
