The 10 most burgled streets in Corby, Northamptonshire, are to be targeted by police in a week-long drive to cut crime. Police and neighbourhood wardens have drawn up a list of 10 crime hotspots.
Recent figures have shown that burglaries in the borough have fallen by more than a quarter from 226 in April, May and June 2008 to 166 in the same three months during 2009. Officers now hope to build on the success by helping residents to make their homes safer during Burglary Action Week. They will be handing out SmartWater security marker kits, as well as alarms, CCTV cameras and window locks.
Burglary advice prevention packs, featuring neighbourhood watch information, security checklists and advice on avoiding burglaries and distraction crimes, will be given to families in the 10 streets.
Inspector Gary Williams said: "Our safer community teams will be working with Corby Council to raise awareness of how residents can make their homes safer. Although burglaries are at the lowest levels for many years we cannot be complacent."
Corby Council leader Pat Fawcett said: "By supporting Burglary Action Week and by taking a few simple security measures in our own homes we can help this trend continue. Simple actions such as locking your windows can make a massive difference."
