The
community-led Safe and Secure Homes project was launched in April
2003, with the intention of cutting burglary by 25% in five areas
of Mansfield: West Tichfield, Bull Farm, Ladybrook, Warsop and Northfield.
The £1million scheme, funded by the Government’s Neighbourhood
Renewal Fund, supplied 5,500 homes with free SmartWater property
coding kits, and wire free burglar alarms. The scheme was also supported
by an intensive media and advertising campaign – which included
advertising SmartWater on the back of Nottingham City Centre buses
(see right).
The results from the first six months of the scheme revealed a
dramatic drop in burglaries that vastly exceeded all expectations.
West Tichfield recorded a reduction of 80%, with the average drop
across all five neighbourhoods standing at 40% - resulting in an
11% drop across the whole of Mansfield. This incredibly successful
campaign is now into its fourth phase, consisting of SmartWatering
the whole of Mansfield.
"One of the greatest successes
in crime reduction we have experienced."
Ak Khan, Mansfield Police Chief
"The figures speak for themselves
in terms of success. We were aiming for a 25% reduction in
burglaries and to achieve that within the first six months
is remarkable."
Sector Inspector Tim Menzies,
Community Safety Officer
