Codenamed ‘Project Spotlight’, this crime reduction
strategy was launched by Greater Manchester Police to tackle burglary
and car theft in the Partington and Carrington areas in January
2004. A joint partnership between Trafford Council, Greater Manchester
Police, and Partington and Carrington Regeneration Partnership,
the strategy provided free crime prevention measures to local residents.
In addition to the distribution of SmartWater property coding kits,
Project Spotlight also issued free car lock to car owners. To further
tackle car crime a high profile television launch focused on the
use of covert SmartWater “trap cars” in vehicle crime
hot-spots – having the effect of reducing car crime by 80%
within the first two months of the campaign. Since Project Spotlight
was launched in January 2004 Partington and Carrington has witnessed
overall crime figures drop by 65%, whilst burglary dropped by 70%.
The
latest key crime figures released for the area show a dramatic
drop in crime rates from December 2003 to the end of February
2004:
- Burglary (dwelling) down by 70%
- Burglary (other, inc. sheds) down by 72%
- Theft of motor vehicles down by 80%
- Theft from motor vehicles down by 60%
- Criminal damage down by 28%
- Anti social behaviour down by 7%
"Partington and Carrington now
have the lowest key crime area figures in Trafford."
